IN THE STUDIO WITH ARIELLA HILL, THE AMSTERDAM-BASED FLORIST BEHIND RAE BLOOMS

This February, PARCTA visited the studio of Amsterdam-based florist, Ariella Hill, founder of Rae Blooms.

Peer inside her world, as she shares insights on her craft, process, and connection to working with flowers.

"When arranged with an intention, flowers evoke feeling. They should create an overall atmosphere for a space."

Can you tell us a little about yourself, and your craft?

I'm Ariella, I grew up in a coastal town in Australia called Byron Bay. I’ve always been drawn to various art forms and mediums. I'm completely flower obsessed which is why I run my own, growing floral design studio, Rae Blooms. Daily, I work on creating installations and arrangements that complement different environments.

What made you eager to get into floristry?

Creating has always been important to me. Growing up, I wasn’t sure what medium was going to stick, I was inspired by so many creative forms. Flowers for me, have everything. An ever-changing pallet full of textures and smells. I need to be around nature to stay grounded. I feel super grateful floristry allows me to express myself this way.

What is your process for selecting and creating floral arrangements?

One of the reasons I love floristry so much is that the process is ever-changing. Often it could be a client will come to you with only a colour, from there the idea can grow. Other times you are inspired by walking through the flower market. You might find one type of flower that's new in season, become overly excited and start grabbing other materials that suit. As long as you're constantly challenging yourself something interesting will happen. When you push yourself a little, the end result is arrangements with little surprises that can really excite.

How do flowers make you feel in a space?

Always better. For me flowers play a huge role in how a space feels. When arranged with an intention, flowers evoke feeling. They should create an overall atmosphere for a space.

How did you approach the styling arrangements for PARCTA, being an object and design brand founded on authenticity?

For this reason, I actually tried not to plan as much for these arrangements, and instead followed my own process and intuition. I collected an array of different things at the local market and then enjoyed playing around as I went. Creating in the moment, these arrangements reflected my style and felt like me.

The Flange Vase is made of stainless steel, with two unique, protruding flanges. How did you come up with the styling arrangements to complement the Flange Vase?

Is such a gorgeous vase. With a significant weight, it is perfect for styling and holding arrangements. As the vase is made from a more brutalist stainless steel, I enjoyed the contrast it provides when living flowers or branches are added. For this reason, I enjoyed experimenting with heights and textures. I loved incorporating draping arrangements with Amartnthus, drawing your eye to the two distinct flanges.
